This wonderful antique Whitby Jet Cameo brooch is Victorian, Circa 1860.
The lovely hand carved Cameo depicts a lovely city scene which we believe could be Edinburgh in the Victorian era, with the spectacular National gallery in front and the historic Edinburgh castle behind.
The carving is very well executed with high relief workmanship carved into a Bullmouth Shell.
Bullmouth Shell is a common base for Cameo carvings for it’s beautiful natural patterning which takes expert skill to carve.
The Cameo is set on a lovely Whitby Jet frame with a base Metal pin on the reverse.
Whitby Jet was brought to the attention of the world by Queen Victoria who used it as part of her mourning attire. Jet is a type of brown coal, a fossilised wood from an ancient tree which today is highly collectable and sought after world wide.
There is a small crack in the Jet frame which is a hair line, its not that noticeable with the naked eye and is otherwise in great condition for its age.
This is a highly collectable Cameo piece and one to be treasured for a lifetime!
