An exquisite Antique mid-Victorian Cameo brooch dated Circa 1880. The central cameo depicts a detailed portrait which has been expertly hand carved from a Bullmouth shell.
Cameos have been carved since ancient times and saw a revival during the Victorian era due to Queen Victoria’s fascination with the pieces. Bullmouth Shell was often used as a base for Cameos for its beautiful natural patterning which takes expert skill to carve.
The Cameo is set in a large base metal frame haloed with green Paste stones that have the rich green hue of Peridots. It is likely the oval gallery was originally an extravagant buckle but has been converted to a brooch with the edition of the cameo as well.
It is a wonderfully unique design and fitted with a strong pin and safety chain on the reverse to hold it securely.
